This small book, printed in Scotland, gathers together brief essays extolling the virtues and "romantic suggestiveness" of old gardens. The essays are written by well-known garden practitioners and luminaries, among others Sir Walter Scott, Sir Uvedale Price, William Lawson, and William Harper. An entry at the end of the book indicates that this title is part of the GREY OLD GARDENS SERIES. This volume is edited by Margaret Waterfield, copies of whose garden watercolors are copiously reproduced herein. In it Scott traces for his own grandchildren the history of Scotland, beginning in volume I with an explanation of how England and Scotland came to be separate kingdoms, the establishment and meaning of the feudal system and the Norman Conquest, the story of Macbeth, and the reigns of James I, II, III, and IV. Within the same cover, volume II details disputes between Scotland and England, the character of James V and Queen Mary and the latter's relationship with Elizabeth I, some geography of the Borders and the Western Isles, and clan development.
