A PLEA FOR HARDY PLANTS: With Suggestions for Effective Arrangement |
Published Date |
1902 |
Publisher |
Doubleday, Page & Company |
Description of Contents |
This thin, copiously illustrated hard-cover book is written by a landscape architect from Pittsburgh, J. Wilkinson Elliott, for an audience of amateur home and "$2 a day" jobbing gardeners. It highlights the general lack of knowledge among these groups about the importance of integrating hardy plants into the scheme for a home garden. The author also laments the widespread lack of adequate garden planning leading to needless expenditures and an inability to "produce(ing" beauty" in the home's outdoor environs. Wilkinson especially denigrates a garden scheme comprising mostly tender, "uninteresting" (annual) bedding plants. He capitalizes on the then-burgeoning move toward suburban residential development, seemingly addressing a new audience of homeowners that have left cities seeking a more pastoral lifestyle. Pasted inside the book's front cover is a hand-signed typed letter from the author to Mrs. W. L. McKee and dated January 2nd, 1903. |
