This is a beautiful book, noteworthy because of its elaborate cover and spine and stunning chromolithographs of wild flowers, along with a narrative accompanying each illustration. The illustrations are reproduced from original watercolours drawn from nature by Isaac Sprague, according to the title page. Isaac Sprague (1811-1895) was the best-known American botanical illustrator of his day. Included in the book are essay and poetic extracts from noteworthy Romantic and Trancendental American authors. The descriptive text narrates some of the special features of each flower selected for the book. |
Physical Description |
Prior to conservation in Spring 2018, this large hardcover book showed wear and dirty covers. The covers have been gently cleaned by The Fish Bindery. Front, spine, and back board are covered with a gold buckram with very fancy mother-of-pearl type flowers on the front cover interwoven with the title in black with gilded inlay and sprays of leaves, also in black. The spine is printed in black and gold with the title and sprays of gilded flowers on stems with leaves at the top and bottom. The back cover is plain. Written in pencil on the first page are the words "Special Collection." The book is printed on heavy cream stock of 156 gilded-edged pages. 10" wide x 12" tall x 3/4" deep. Beautifully illustrated with chromolithographs of wild flowers, now preserved under tissue. illustrated. |
