This book is written by the famous American plant hunter and head of The Arnold Arboretum, Ernest H. "Chinese" Wilson. It is the successor to and complements Wilson's ARISTOCRATS OF THE GARDEN. This title provides more specific information about individual plant categories, species, and varieties. It also offers very specific guidance on placement of plant material within estates and public spaces. |
Physical Description |
Book measures 6 1/2" wide; 9 1/2" tall; and 1 31/2" deep, with 288 pages of deckle-cut edges. From the top, pages are smooth cut and gilded. Printed on heavy weight cream-colored stock with glazed paper for illustrations. Front, back and spine are covered in dark maroon striated faux leather. The front cover carries the title and author's name in gilded lettering. Title, author's surname, and publisher's name printed in gold on spine, along with a stylized spray of flowers. Each chapter begins with drop capital within a black-line square in the manner of a floriferous illuminated manuscript. Copiously indexed. Illustrated with 43 full page half-tone photos credited to the author. |
