1976.1.A059.01 Ladies Complete Register (Bessie’s journal) Bessie began recording details of daily life and events in her "Ladies Complete Register". This fabulous journal was used to track names and addresses of visitors, important daily events, inventories, purchases, staffing and entertaining details. Guests received in 1896 included local families such as the Howes, Thurbers, Herreshoffs, DeWolfs, Littletons, Luthers, and more. Other entries include brief descriptions of events such as the first night at Blithewold and a boat trip to Newport as well as lists of things such as tablecloths, silver, and household staff during the Summer of 1896. Entries begin in 1896 and run through 1901. All are handwritten by Bessie Van Wickle McKee. The Ladies Complete Register is described on the title page as "A Social, Literary, Domestic and Business Companion". There are fifteen categories listed on the contents page. |
