Volume 1 of a complete set of 20. Heinrich Heine was a German writer of the 1800's. His works include poetry, philosophy, criticism, and political opinions.Some of his early lyric poetry was later set to music (known as lieder) by Schumann and Schubert. As time went on he was regarded as unpatriotic, and his works were banned by the Nazi regime, which called them 'subversive'. His literary reputation was much stronger in France, England, and America.
