Description of Contents |
This book is a substantially revised and illustrated version of another book with a similar title in the collection (Obj.#1561), both of which are written by the Massachusetts state ornithologist and published by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It is dense with illustrations and text of a scientific nature, exploring the history, breeding habits, nesting practices, food preferences, habitat ranges, and conservation challenges of non-garden birds. The book is very-well indexed and beautifully illustrated with coloured plates from drawings by the naturalist Louis Agassiz Fuertes. Note that these plates do not appear in the other book in the collection of the same title. Before Plate 11, inserted into the book is a small cut from a newspaper (?) of a duck decoy. The author, Edward Forbush, was a noted ornithologist, prolific writer, and one of the founders of the Audubon Society. From 1908 he was the ornithologist of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Within the book ( precise pages unknown) was found Obj. # 1976.1.2164b, pencilled drawings of water birds, one set in its shoreside context.. Blithewold's curator, MW, believes the images were drawn by one of Marjorie Lyon's WWII wards from England, Ian Wilson. (See bio created for archives "Living History File.") |
