The title of the book is self-descriptive. According to the preface, its objective is "to furnish an opportunity for a more intimate acquaintance with our American trees." There is no formal Table of Contents but rather a list of plates and descriptions of trees, with their botanical names given, and the page numbers where one finds illustrations and precise identifying characteristics. To make the book user-friendly, trees are classified according to their botanical family. The book is fully indexed. |
Physical Description |
This book (7.75" wide, 9.50" tall, 7/8" deep) is heavy for its size. Front, back, and spine are covered in dimpled forest green faux leather. The front cover has an image of three ivy leaves which may have been at one time gilded but now are mostly black. The spine is printed with the title, author's name, and publisher's name, also at one time possibly with gilded lettering. Pages are evenly cut, spine is intact, and printed stock is heavy and slightly shiny. There is a handwritten, inked inscription on the inside of the front cover "For the Commodore/with kind regards from/The DeWolfs./9-21-'37. There are numerous full-page black and white illustrations. BLITHEWOLD Gardens & Arboretum is stamped in ink near the front of the book.. Illustrated. |
