This book, originally published in 1895, is written by Alicia Margaret Tyssen Amherst (30 July 1865 – 14 September 1941), an English horticulturist, botanist, and author of the first scholarly account of English gardening history. It instantly became a classic and was found in the homes of most female American gardeners of the period and for years after. The Hon. Lady Amherst also wrote about London parks and children's gardens. Inscribed in a fine hand at the beginning of the book is "Bessie Pardee McKee/Christmas 1910/ G.P.K" (Gertrude Pardee Keller). |
Physical Description |
This hardcover book is bound on the front, spine, and back with a mid-green fine-grained buckram. The cover is detailed in gold lettering with the name of the author and the book title, along with a medieval garden scene, also in gold. The spine has the title and author plus publisher and a stylized spray of roses, detailed in gold. The book's pages, numbering 393, are a combination of glazed paper for illustrations and plain cream paper for text. Pages are rough cut at the bottom edge and more evenly trimmed at the top and front edge. Measures 9" tall; 6" wide; and 2 1/4" deep. Between pages 218 and the following illustration page is a small enclosure card (Obj#1976.1.2161b) with "Mrs. Harry Melick Keller" on one side and "With much love and many happy returns of the day"/ from/Gertrude/January 30th, 1911" The little envelope is addressed: "Mrs. William H. McKee/284 Commonwealth Ave/Boston/Mass." Indexed and illustrated. |
