Volume 1.- Part 1 (no subsequent volumes evident; they may be found elsewhere in the mansion at a later date) A narrative of the life of Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792), an influential English painter in the 1700's. He promoted the "Grand Style" in painting, which depended on the idealization of the imperfect. There is a sample of Reynolds handwriting inserted after the title page. The Reynolds Family genealogy is included, beginning 1609 and ending 1735. There is a letter from Tom Taylor inserted prior to the title page. Contents: follow the chronology of Reynolds' life in 5 chapters. Illustrations: many black and white engravings throughout of Reynolds and his contemporaries. |

Green leather covers inlaid with gold outline, a gold embossed cameo, and signature on front and back. Spine decorated with 4 gold medallions and gold lettering. Extra-illustrated Edition. Page tops are gilded; sides and bottoms are ragged-edged.. Inside covers, front and back, are decorated with gold filigreed borders; centers and facing pages are ruby colored watered silk. Many illustrations, engravings and drawings h 8.75", w 5.75", d 1.25" pagination 154 pages. |
