This book is a practical treatise aimed at an amateur audience of primarily home gardeners. The authors begin with a statement of their philosophy: "Gardening is a craft, a science, and an art. To practice it well requires the enthusiasm of the true amateur and the understanding of the true student." America's Garden Book purports to be all things to all gardeners. It's an illustrated dictionary of plant material, a how-to for maintaining one's home grounds, and covers propagation, vegetables, fruits, flowers, lawns, pests, trees, shrubs, hardscaping, design, garden equipment, and greenhouses. There is also a gardening calendar prescribing treatments for various plant material challenges in different seasons. Cultivation instructions provided by the authors are illustrated with half-tones, line drawings, charts, maps, and lists. Plant material is identified by scientific and common names. Color and fragrance are noted. As one would expect for a book of this scope and depth, it is dense with information and numbers 1242 pages, with a generous index. |
Physical Description |
This is a dense and hefty book with boards covered with a fine-grained spring green buckram. The front cover is printed with the book title under which is a horizontal band and stylized acanthus leaf and scroll. There are 1242 pages of evenly cut edges. Printed on the spine is the authors' surname, book title, and publisher's name. It is ornamented with two horizontal bands and the same acanthus and scroll found on the cover. Front and back endpapers are identical, and show a map of zones of hardiness for the US. Inside at the front is an ink stamp, BLITHEWOLD/Gardens & Arboretum, which has bled onto the following page.
