Description of Contents |
This book, like the others in the collection illustrated and written by William Hamilton Gibson (1850-1896) (#1976.1.1596a; #1976.1.2150), shows evidence of lavish production values with a romantic rusticated text and scenic drawings of woodland creatures and views. The title is self-descriptive. Gibson was known as a very fine illustrator of his era and less so for his literary talents. The poetry of the Romantic poet William Wordsworth and others of a similar genre is interspersed with Gibson's text. Highly decorative covers and spines are particular hallmarks of Gibson's publications. HIGHWAYS AND BYWAYS is dedicated to Gibson's mother. Birds, Woods, Trees, Gardens, Animals, Flowers. |
