This book is one of several in the Blithewold collection by Ernest Wilson, The Arnold Arboretum director who visited Marjorie in 1926, with Alfred Rehman also of The Arnold. It is presumed to be part of the Blithewold collection despite its inscription, "Christmas Greetings/to Ruth and Edward/from Ruth and Edwin/1930." There are 43 black and white images, mostly taken from photographs by the author. The book is a straight-forward treatise on plants for different sorts of gardens as well as an itemization by chapter of specific shrubs and trees. |
Physical Description |
This is a dense book of 288 pages printed on standard cream stock. Page edges are deckle- cut on all three sides. Each chapter begins with handsome floriferous drop caps. The book measures 6 1/2" wide x 8 1/2" tall x 2" deep. It is bound with a fraying deep red glazed linen-like cover. The book's title and author's name are printed in gold on the front and spine, with the publisher's identification and a spray of stylized ivy (?) also on the spine. Endpapers are plain. Indexed and illustrated with black and white photographs. |
