Volume II of the illustrated biography of Sir Walter Scott by John Gibson Lockhart as part of a series of ten volumes. There are nine in Blithewold archives; there may be a tenth elsewhere in the Mansion. Volume II details Scott's early married life up to his appointment as Clerk of Sessions, in 1806. There are six illustrations, including a black and white depiction of Scott and his dog in 1805, after a painting by James Saxon in the Victoria and Albert Museum. There is one illustration in color, that of Lasswade Cottage (location unknown), apparently where he and his new wife began their lives together. Scott's early relationship with the poet William Wordsworth is mentioned in this volume. |
Physical Description |
Brown leather binding with gold lettering and images of stylized portculli on spine. Volume number on spine beneath title. Particularly lovely end papers of marbelized grey and brown which wrap around to front and back of book to form a decorative triangle within the brown leather. There is a narrow brown satin ribbon bound into the book as a page marker. Page ends and sides are of an uneven cut with top of pages uniform and gilded. Dimensions of this volume are 9" in height; 6" wide; and 1 7/8" in depth. |
