GARDENING FOR BEGINNERS: A Handbook to the Garden |

Description of Contents |
This book is well-known in the cannon of early 20th century garden literature, primarily because the first edition (this is the 2nd) carries a preface by the pre-eminent English horticulturist Gertrude Jekyll. (Jekyll's preface is reproduced in the 2nd.) The book is also notable because it was written specifically for beginning gardeners, theretofore an under-appreciated audience. The subject matter is a soup-to-nuts 'how-to' for nascent home gardeners with advice on both ornamental and practical gardening. Published by the Country Life Library, a popular press at the time, it was written by Sir Edward Tyas Cook (12 May 1857 – 30 September 1919), an English journalist, biographer, and man of letters. There are at least two other titles by Cook in Blithewold's collection, both about the 19th century art critic John Ruskin. |
