One of a two volume limited edition set written by and about the life and work of the noted English naturalist, The Reverend Gilbert White, M. A. (1720-1793) In addition to this series (which includes extensive reference notes to many primary sources), there is information about White's property and gardens in SELBORNE, Hampshire, near the border with Sussex. Both the village and the property carry the name SELBORNE. This book is number 201 of 208 copies printed "for America." Here White's extensive epistolary writings are edited by R. Bowdler Sharpe. LL.D. Sharpe, who, although noted as "editor" is actually one of White's biographers. These two volumes are substantial in both content and heft, and beautifully illustrated with black and white drawings of natural history subjects by a variety of well-known British artists. |
Physical Description |
Measures approximately 6 1/2" wide; 9" tall; and 2 1/2" deep. The book contains 427 pages printed on heavy cream stock. Tops of pages are gilded. Its heft is substantial. Front and back boards are covered with fine-grained glazed green buckram. The spine is covered in that same material. The only embellishment on the front cover is a gilded image of the author's family crest. The spine is printed in gilded lettering with the title, editor's name, and American publisher's name. Endpapers are plain.There is a fading and fragile green ribbon page marker bound into the book. Beautifully illustrated,. |
