Description of Contents |
First of a three volume set of the very well-known early 20th century encyclopedia of horticulture by the foremost academic and field practitioner of his day, Liberty Hyde Bailey. (more usually L. H. Bailey, 1858-1954) of Cornell University. This series of three was originally copyright in 1900; after subsequent editions, Mr. Bailey expanded and slightly re-ordered the contents to reflect new information. The first of this three volume arrangement was published in 1928. The Blithewold set was published in 1935. Its extensive title is self-descriptive. Volume I contains entries A through E. It is dense with scientific information, and profusely illustrated with black-and-white half-tones and colored plates, Any serious home gardener with thoughts of accomplishment and peer recognition would have had this series in the family library. This obviously leads one to understand how studiously the owners of Blithewold approached their horticultural activities. |
