A 2 volume set of 34 essays and short stories by Washington Irving (1783-1859). They were originally published serially between 1819 and 1820. They made Irving a publishing success. The majority of the entries focus on English life and customs in the 1800's. The 5 American focused stories are the well-known Irving tales such as Rip Van Winkle, and The legend of Sleepy Hollow.. Geoffrey is the fictitious character through whom the observations are made. A Preface to the Revised Edition written by Irving in 1848 is included. Vol. 1 of 2 |

Navy buckram covers. Elaborate gold designs all over the front cover, with a cream colored medallion in the center. The spine has gold lettering and a gold design similar to that on the front cover. Plain endpapers. Interior pages are all outlined with colored leaf designs.
