This folder contains correspondence, documents, and news clippings related to evergreens and Giant Sequoia. Unless otherwise noted, all Item numbers below begin with 1976.1.A009.02 Item# Description 01 Letter from Charles F. Jenkins of the Hemlock Arboretum to Marjorie, concerning the Giant Sequoia. December 3,1947. Typed on Hemlock Arboretum letterhead. Handwritten on the bottom of the letter:"ans 4/30/48 that I was having pictures taken + would send." 8.50"W x 11"H. Good condition. 02 Envelope from item above, addressed to: Mrs. George A. Lyon/Bristol/R.I. This is crossed out and handwritten in ink is:" 209 Newton St/Brookline/Mass. "Handwritten on the envelope "Sequoia/ans with Photo 1/10/49." 9.25"H x 4"H. Fair condition. Edges of envelope are faded. 03 "The Hemlock Arboretum" bulletin. Dated October 1, 1947. No. 60. Four pages. Black and white. 8.50"H x 6"W. Fair condition. Discolored crease in the middle of the pages. 04.p1-4 Handwritten measurements of Giant Sequoia, in pencil. 1948. List heading is "Redwood." Three individual sheets, first two pages are front and back of a single sheet. Ecru colored notepaper. Each sheet measures 7"H x 3"W. Good condition. 05 Providence Journal news clipping with article and images about the Blithewold Giant Sequoia. August 8, 1948. Titled, "Tree Grows in Bristol." Good condition. 08 Letter from W.Warren Anderson of the Rare Plant Club to the mayor of Bristol, RI asking for a photo of the Giant Sequoia at Blithewold. December 10,1948. Typed on Rare Plant Club letterhead. Handwritten on the bottom of the letter:"Geo. Lyons / 209 Newton St/Brookline/ans/1/10/49." 8.50"W x 11"H. Good condition. 09 Envelope from 08. Addressed to The Honorable Mayor/Bristol,/Rhode Island. Handwritten on the envelope:"My Dear Mrs Lyon/My husband thought/this ought to go direct to you./It's very interesting + let us/know about the outcome for/our garden club + the Phoenix-/Sincerely/Mabel Hoover." Fair condition. Tear on right side of envelope. 10 Letter from George L. Church of Brown University asking if the measurements of the Giant Sequoia had changed since 1948. The photo of the Sequoia (not found with this letter), which he enclosed, will be used in an article published by the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. June 4, 1951. Good condition. 19 Letter to Marjorie, from Dr. R.L.Williams of Yale University, asking for information about the Giant Sequoia. March 14, 1967. Typed on Yale University letterhead. Handwritten on the bottom of the letter:"ans 4/15/67." 8.50"W x5.50"H. Good condition. 20 Letter to Mrs. George A. Lyon, from University of Minnesota, thanking her for allowing a group visit to Blithewold. March 21, 1967. Typed on University of Minnesota letterhead. Good condition. 21 Handwritten letter from R.L.Williams of Yale University thanking Marjorie for information about the Giant Sequoia.June 2, 1967. Black and white. 8.50"W x 11"H. Good condition. 22 Handwritten letter from R.L. Williams at Map Laboratory, Yale University concerning Giant Sequoia seeds. September 21,1967. Black and white. 8.50"W x 11"H. Good condition. 23 Envelope from 22. Typed address to: Mrs. G. Lyon/Blithewold/Bristol, Rhode Island. Handwritten in ink:"tell him/that the/35-40 year old one/has viable cones too!" Ecru colored. 6.50"W x 3.50"H. Good condition. 24 Letter from the assistant librarian, Richard L. Champlin, of the Redwood Library concerning the Giant Sequoia. 1968. Richard asks to learn the history of the Giant Sequoia and relates his two visits to Blithewold to view the tree. 10.50"H x 7.25"W. Good condition. 25 Envelope from 24. Handwritten above address:"re Redwood/ans 11/30/68." On the back of the envelope, under the return address is handwritten:"asst librarian of/Redwood Library." 4"H x 7.25"W. Good condition. 26 Handwritten letter from Richard Champlin, the assistant Librarian at Redwood Library, asking permission to submit an article concerning the Giant Sequoia at Blithewold to Yankee Magazine. Jan 25, 1969. Handwritten on the side and top of letter:"My (?) that when we last/ measured the Sequoia Gigantea it was about 80 feet + (?) the Sequoia had its top broken in a storm many years ago." It is always beautiful/at any time of year/The Arboretum calls it Sequoai Gigantea." 10.50"H x 7"W. Good condition. 27 Torn scrap of paper, from a Museum of Fine Arts donation, with handwritten information concerning an upcoming visitor to Blithewold on the reverse. May 1972. On reverse side of the paper is handwritten:"Mr. Victor Allen R.I.Development/ Council/ called re Redwood/ asked questions/may visit (call me first)/ May 1972." Cardstock. 4.25"H x 3.50W. Good condition except that the card is torn to be used for scrap paper. 28 Handwritten note concerning a spray (Daconil or Benomyl) to be used on the Giant Sequoia for fungus. 1974. In pencil, an additional note says:"for next year 1974 / for fungus on / Sequoia. Did/not try it." Spray names are written in ink on a small piece of lined paper, torn from a spiral notebook. 4.50"H x 3"W. Good condition. 29 Handwritten postcard from Marie Newton concerning the age of the Giant Sequoia. Undated. Colorful leaf drawings design. Card is addressed to: Mr. Donald Buma/ Blithewold,Ferry Rd./ Bristol,R.I./02809. 4.25"H x 6"W. Good condition. 30 Typed narrative of presentation of the Theodore Hebert Award to Marjorie Lyon. Handwritten note below text:"Bowl presented to me by the Garden Club on December 13th,1973 (by Elise Palmer). Mention's the flourishing of the only Giant Redwood tree (Sequoia) in this part of the country. 8.50"W x 11"H. Good condition. |
