Included is a low res copy of a letter from Marjorie Lyon to Sonia Wilson, given by Pat Sissan (sp.) as well as a folder of rock garden photos that may not be the Blithewold Rock Garden. There is only one folder of photos. Unless otherwise noted, all photos are original prints. Photograph numbers above begin with 1976.1.A013. Folder 01 (1976.1.A013) Rock Garden Photos The single folder in this box contains photographs of the early Rock Garden, as well as a copy of a letter written by Marjorie Lyon. The letter contains references to trees contained in the Blithewold Rock Garden. Photo#Photo Description 01a Photograph showing large rocks being placed near the summit of the garden. Chains are evident around some rocks. Large evergreens and unleafed deciduous trees are in the background. Wm McKee can be seen standing next to the large evergreen on the left. Large chains are visible on some of the rocks. is wearing a jacket, long pants, and a hat. Photograph is similar to 01.01a. Good condition. 05 Construction of Rock Garden using heavy equipment to plant large trees. Three men are next to the wheels of the equipment, All are wearing long pants,long sleeved shirts,and hats. Written on the back of the photograph:"Building rock garden Blithewold." 1929 4.50"W x 2.75"H. Black and white. Good condition. 06Copy on photo paper of horse drawn equipment during construction of Rock Garden 1929. Original photograph is in box A015. Two white horses are hitched to heavy equipment. Several men are working on something (a large rock?) near the equipment. 10"W x 8"H. Black and white. Good condition. Old number:76.870. Undated. 07Completed Rock Garden (?) 1932. There is a young woman (Wm. McKee's sister?) standing on top of a rock. Her hands are raised above her head, one leg is out to the side. There appears to me another woman or a statue of a woman to the right of the woman on the rock. 4.50"W 2.75"H. Black and white. Good condition. 08.01Completed Rock Garden Summer 1955. Rock / Stone bench in foreground. Large evergreens and deciduous trees in the background. Grassy area is in center of the rock garden. Written on the back of the photograph:"Rock Garden." 3.50"W x3.50"H. Black and white. Good condition. 08.02Completed Rock Garden from a different angle than 01.08.01. Photo is taken from behind the rock bench. Grassy area in center of Rock Garden. Large evergreens and deciduous trees in the background. 3.50"W x3.50"H. Black and white. Good condition. 1955 09.01Completed Rock Garden (?) Summer 1957. Several plants in bloom. Written on the back of the photograph:"Rock Garden 1957. Pink Cast - color has shifted to pink. 10 Rock Garden in summer 1960s. Shows rock path and mature trees. Many low growing flowers are in bloom. Written on back of photo:"Broun (sp) -1960s." Black and white. 5"W x 7"H. Good condition. 11 Rock Garden spring 1984. Unleafed deciduous trees surrounding the garden. Stepping stones and large rocks in foreground. Written on back of photo:"Rock garden spring 1984/photo by Julie Morris." 5.75"W x 4"H. Color. Good condition. 12 Low res copy of letter from Marjorie Lyon to Sophia Wilson mentioning two trees that are included in the Blithewold Rock Garden. Letter given through Pat Sissan (sp). Original needs to be located. The letter mentions the Franklinia and Kalopanax trees at Blithewold. No date on letter. 13 These photos "are not of the Blithewold Rock Garden" according to Julie Morris, 2019. There are four small photos and an enlargement of one of the photos. Small photos are black and white and measure 3.25"W x 2.25"H. All are in good condition. Old numbers are: 76.936, 76.937, 76.938, 76.943. The enlargement of one of the photos (old number 76.943) is copied on glossy paper. It measures 10.25"W x 8.25"H. Black and white. Fair condition. Blurry. |
