Handwritten at the bottom of the photograph are the following names:" Mrs. Bartholomew, Miss Anne Pardee, J. F. Barber / Mrs. A.S. Van Wickle, Miss Edith Pardee, A.S. Van Wickle / Miss Minnie Pew, Miss Gertrude Pardee, Edgar P. Earle / Miss Estelle Clements, S. D. Allison / "Camp Hazel" July 1885." On the back is a printed quote: "A good traveler is / something / at the / latter end of a dinner. / Shak." Below four lines have been handwritten by Estelle Clements, but are difficult to decipher. Sepia. 7" W x 4 1/4" L. Glued to a page which may have been taken from a book. Poor condition, significant fading, discoloration along the edges, which have been creased and torn. 06a Augustus, back row, second from right; Bessie, back right; Marjorie with doll, sitting with friends and family in a lean-to in the Adirondacks, 1888. Black and white. 9 " W x 7" L. with 1 1/2" beige border. Good condition. 06bCopy of the above photograph. Fair condition, the border has a little discoloration. 07a Augustus in what appears to be a riding habit standing on the porch at The Sagamore, Long Lake, in the Adirondacks, 1888. Handwritten in pencil: "A.S.V.W. figure on porch / 1888" Printed: VIEW AT THE SAGAMORE. LONG LAKE./ ADIRONDACKS, N.Y. / 1296" Black and white 9" W x 7" L with beige border. The photograph is in good condition, but he border has some spotting. 07b Copy of the above photograph. The photograph is in good condition, but he border has some spotting. 08a Augustus, Bessie, Marjorie and their dog, Sara Ito. Printed on the back: "MANUFACTURERS OF THE / KODAK / CAMERA / EASTMAN KODAK COM. / 115 OXFORD ST. LONDON / ROCHESTER N.Y." Black and white. Glued on stiff black cardboard. 3 1/2" W x 3 1/2" L. The photograph is in good condition, but the top of the black cardboard is chipped. 08b Copy of the above photograph. The photograph is in good condition. 09.01a Studio portrait of Augustus and Marjorie looking at a book. Black and white original. Glued on stiff cardboard. Photograph is 11 2/2" W x 9 1/2" L. Dimensions of photograph and cardboard mat: 19 1/2" W x 15 1/2" L. Fair condition with mirroring. Stored at the bottom of the box due to its size. 09.01b Copy of the above photograph printed on linen weave paper. There is a white mat, which has become unglued from the photograph. The photograph is mounted on cardboard. On the back a page from "The Fireside Companion / Sample Copy / New York, June 18, 1898" is glued. Black and white. Photograph is 14" W x 11 3/4" L. Dimensions of photograph and cardboard mat: 19 1/2" W x 15 1/2" L. Fair condition, some chipping at edges. Stored at the bottom of the box due to its size. 09.02 Framed studio portrait of Augustus and Marjorie looking at a book. Photograph by Kellmer. Smaller version of the above photographs. Black and white. Written in pencil: "Kellmer - 98" 4 1/4" W x 3" L, with 1" beige mat, and 1/2" gold frame. Good condition. 09.02 Unframed copy of the above photograph. Handwritten on back: "Marjorie Van Wickle + / her father Augustus Van Wickle / 1898 / Marjorie was 14 years old" The photograph is in good condition, but the mat has significant foxing/spotting. 10a Studio portrait of Marjorie standing next to Augustus. Both are wearing the same clothing that appears in the above photo 9a and 9b. Gray mat embossed: "Kellmer / HAZLETON, PA." Likely 1898 per photographer's note on above photo. Black and white. 3 3/4" W x 5 1/2" L with 1" gray mat. Photograph is good condition, but the mat has spotting at bottom. 10b Black and white slide of above photograph. 2' W x 2"L. Good condition. 11 Two oval portraits of Augustus's older brother, George Van Wickle in profile. Black and white with beige border. 4 1/2" W x 3 1/2" L. Good condition. 12 Oval Studio portrait of Augustus's niece, May Van Wickle, in a plaid dress with a bow in her hair. She was the daughter of George and Hattie Van Wickle. Black and white. 2 1/2 " W x 3 3/4" L. The photograph is mounted on stiff cardboard with bifold cardboard closure. "Randolph" is written below the photo, likely the photographer. The photograph is in good condition, the cardboard has some minor spotting. Old # 76.1690 13.01 Photo of a man and woman in a buggy pulled by one horse. Written on the back: "Mr Mrs McKee in Buggy / Blithewold" However, it may be Augustus's brother George Van Wickle and his wife. Sepia. 4 1/2" W x 3 1/2" L. Good condition. Old # 76.960 13.02 Similar to the above photo a man and woman in a buggy pulled by one horse. Written on the back: "Mr + Mrs Van Wickle / in their / equipage" and Mr + Mrs Van W / in (------ cart)" However, it may be Augustus's brother George Van Wickle and his wife. Sepia. 4 1/2" W x 3 1/2" L. Fair condition, faded. Old # 76.961 13.03 Similar to the above photo, a woman sits in a buggy and a man holds the horse's reins. Written on the back: "Mrs Van Wickle / (Aunt Bessie) in dogcart / Mr Van Wickle at horse's head" However, it may be Augustus's brother George Van Wickle and his wife. Black and white. 4 1/2" W x 3 1/2" L. Fair condition, may have been ripped from an album, so some residue on the back. Old # 76.958 14 Dock at Blithewold with a woman is standing at the right. Sepia. 2" W x 1 1/2" L. Glued on a white mat, embossed "POCKET KODAK" These cameras were introduced in 1895 and discontinued in 1900. Likely someone in the family took these photographs, since these cameras were easy to use and cost only $5.00. Poor condition, severe fading in the center. 15.01 Pocket Kodak photo of spectators at the Newport Casino. Written on back: "Newport Tennis" Black and white. 2" W x 1 1/2" L. Photograph in good condition, mat has some spotting. 16 Pocket Kodak photo of a group of men who appear to be on the stern of sailboat. Lines are visible at the left and a ship's bell at the right. Black and white. 2" W x 1 1/2" L. 17 Photo of an unidentified man. Golf clubs and a fire extinguisher are visible in the foreground. Sepia. 3 1/2" W x 4 1/2" L. Fair condition, some fading. 18 Framed Providence, RI newspaper clipping dated Thursday, June 9, 1898 detailing the accidental shooting death of Augustus. Headline reads: 'ACCIDENTALLY SHOT. / Augustus Van Wickle Met Death at / Clay Pigeon Shoot / NEWS CAME AS A SHOCK TO THE / PEOPLE OF BRISTOL" The two column article features a sketch of Blithewold. Framed article 4 1/2" W x 9" L., surrounded by a 1 " mat within a brown wood frame. |
