Box 1976.1.P050 Augustine Van Wickle Shaw Toland 1898-1977 Folder 05 (1976.1.P050.05) Augustine's Studio Portraits 1906-1943 Photo# Photo Description 01.01 This is one of a series of sepia studio portraits of young Augustine Van Wickle wearing a white dress, black stockings, high button shoes, and a big bow in her hair, which were taken by Pierce in 1906. (See folder of proofs, 1976.1.P050.04) These photographs are printed onto paperboard, which creates a border. This is a photograph of Augustine sitting on a wooden chair with her legs crossed. Her high button shoes and black stockings are visible. Sepia. Print is 4 1/2" W x 7" L; mat is 7 1/8" W x 10 1/8" L. Good condition. 02.02 Photograph of Augustine in a white dress with lacy collar and hem. She has a big bow in her hair and her black stockings and shoes are visible. She stands with one hand on her hip and holds what appears to be a hat with a feather. Illegible photographer's signature on front. Black and white. Photograph is 4 1/4" W x 6 1/4" L. Mat is 8 1/2" W x 12 1/2" L. Good condition. 03.01 Studio portrait by Garo, Boston of young Augustine in a blouse with a lace collar and a bow at center front. She has a dark color bow in her hair. Sepia. Oval photograph is 4" W x 6" L. Mat is 8 1/2" W x 11 1/2" L. (Original brown folder 03.01b is 9 1/4 W " x 12" L.) Good condition. 04 Studio portrait of young Augustine in a fur coat and fur hat with a feather. The photograph is printed on paperboard within an elaborate oval mat frame. Sepia. Oval photograph is 8" W x 9 1/2" L. Mat is 13 1/2" W x 16 1/2" L. The photograph is in good condition, but the mat has five tears on the left side. 05 Studio portrait of young adult Augustine in profile ca. 1916. The collar of a white blouse is visible and her hair is loosely tied in a bun. Sepia, 6 3/4" W x 8 3/4" L. Good condition. 06a Studio portrait of young adult Augustine by Garo, Boston. Her dress has sheer sleeves and a flower at the front center.Sepia. Photograph is 8 1/2" W x 11 1/2" L. Mat is 9 3/4" W x 14 1/2" L. Good condition. 06b The original is the original brown cardboard folder. 10" W x 14 3/4" L. Good condition. 07.01a Studio portrait of Augustine, 21 years of age, in her satin and lace bridal gown from Fox, N.Y. She wears a veil, which is secured by a floral band. A brooch is pinned to the bodice of the dress. Her large bridal bouquet contains ferns and flowers; leaves appear to be attached to long ribbons, which hang from the bouquet. Her marriage to Quincy Adams Shaw took place on June 24, 1919 at Old South Church, Boston. Summer. Sepia. Photograph is 8 1/2" W x 9 1/4" L. Mat is 9 1/2" W x 13 1/4" L. (Original brown folder 07b is 10 1/2" W x 14" L.) Good condition. 07.02 Interior of Old South Church, Boston decorated for the wedding of Augustine to Quincy Shaw on June 24, 1919. The pews are decorated with what are likely roses. Summer. Sepia. Photograph is 9" W x 7" L. Mat is 14" W x 11" L. The mat is embossed in the lower left corner: " J.E. PURDY & CO. / BOSTON." Good condition. 08aStudio portrait by Bachrach of adult Augustine in profile wearing a dress and a single strand of pearls. Sepia. Oval photograph is 7 1/4" W x 9" L. Mat is 9 3/4" W x 15 3/4" L. On the back of the photograph is a sticker, which reads " A suitable and dis- / tinctive frame for / this photograph - / one especially se- / lected for size, color / and harmony with / Bachrach Portraits / - may be had at all / Bachrach Studios / at a fair price." Good condition. 08b The original brown cardboard folder has a maroon and gold sticker on the front, which reads: "A Portrait by / Bachrach" 10" W x 16" L. Good condition. 09.01a One of four identical studio portraits by Okei Seizo, Providence, of Augustine, 39 years old, in the living room of Blithewold posing in her wedding gown for her marriage to Robert Toland in 1937. Her wedding dress was originally worn by her mother, Bessie for her second wedding to William McKee in 1901. The skirt portion of the dress is made of ivory silk satin charmeuse embellished with Maltese bobbin lace, beadwork and sequins. Augustine wore the skirt with different bodice with more of an ecru color. The material and style of the bodice is of a similar era to the original. The short sleeves are made of sheer silk. Beadwork consists of pearlized pink, green and white beads, clear glass beads, pearls and silver sequins.Summer. Sepia. Photograph is 7 1/4" W x 9" L. Mat is 10" W x 13 3/4" L. Photograph is in the original folder, which is stamped in red in the upper left corner: " OKI SEIZO / PROVIDENCE" Good condition. 09.01b Copy of above. 09.01c Copy of above. 09.01d Copy of above. 10 Studio portrait of adult Augustine Toland, 45 years of age, dated 1943.
