Index for Box 2023NC.1.P001 Augustine Van Wickle Shaw Toland 1898-1977 2023NC.1.P001.06-.14 Augustine's Teen Years through Marriage to Quincy Shaw 1914-1919 These photographs are Not Collection (that is, they are not part of Blithewold's permanent collection); The photos were loaned by the Jeffries family for Blithewold's use in the 2023 "All about Augustine" exhibits. With permission, we have scanned the photos for our future use. Originals will be returned to the Jeffries family in 2024. Photo#Photo Description 06A side view of Augustine sitting in her bridesmaid dress for Marjorie Van Wickle's marriage to George Armstrong Lyon on June 1, 1914, at Blithewold. She wears a hat festooned with flowers. The photo is in a tan cardboard folder; "Elizabeth Cary / Studio / Bristol, R.I." is stamped on the front flap. Sepia. 7" x 9 1/2" Photo is in god condition, but the image has transferred to the interior of the folder. 07Glued onto a tan mat, a 1914 photo of a smiling Augustine on horseback. An unidentified man is on horseback next to her. "OCT 3 1914" is stamped below the photo. "N G H Jr." is written in ink on the bottom right corner of the mat. "N.G. Herre / OCT" is stamped on the back of the mat; the corner is torn off, so the last name isn't completely visible. However, it likely refers to N. G. Herreshoff. Sepia. Photo 9 3/4" x 8" and mat 2" Poor condition: fading, spotting, 3 1/2" x 2" left top corner of the mat is torn off. 08Augustine (back row fourth from left) in a group school photo within a 1/2" dark wood frame. All the young ladies, except the teacher, wear white blouses and dark skirts. "Foster Bros. / Pictures & Frames," / 4 Park Square, Boston" is a label on the back. Black and white. 10" x 8" Good condition. 09Oval studio portrait of Augustine in a dark dress with white collar, printed onto a tan and cream mat and held in a tan cardboard folder. "Garo" written in pencil below the photo. Sepia. 7" x 10" Photo is in good condition; however, the mat has some transfer from the photo. 10Studio portrait of Augustine in a black dress with white color, printed on a cream mat and held in a gray folder. "Marceau / 160 Tremont St. / Boston" is stamped on the bottom right of the mat and Augustine is written in pencil below the photo. "Marceau / New York Studio / 624 Fifth Avenue / Philadelphia Studio / 1609 Chestnut Street / Boston Studio / 160 Tremont Street" and a coat of arm is stamped on the front of the folder. Black and white. 7" x 10" Fair condition; a few small spots. 11Large studio portrait of Augustine seated next to a pot of flowering bulbs. She wears a white dress with fur trim on the short sleeves and neck. Black and white 11 1/4" x 14 1/4" photo printed within a 1/2" gray mat. Fair condition: some small tears in the mat and slight spotting on the photo. 12Oval, colorized studio portrait of Augustine within a gold wooden frame. She wears a rose dress with white color and a large rose pinned to the bodice. "Garo / 1916" is written on the left of the photograph. Photo 7 1/2" x 9 3/4" and within the frame dimensions are 9 /2" x11 1/2" The photo appears to be in good condition; the glass is dirty and the frame has a few chips. 13Studio portrait of Augustine standing in her satin and lace bridal gown from Fox, N.Y. She holds a large bridal bouquet with flowers and ribbons. Her marriage to Quincy Shaw took place on June 24, 1919, at Old South Church, Boston. "Garo" is written in pencil on the mat. The sepia photo is printed on a tan and cream mat, and is held in a brown folder. 9 1/2" 14" Good condition. 14Framed studio portrait of Augustine seated in her satin and lace bridal gown and holding her bridal bouquet. "Garo 1917" is written in the upper right corner. Sepia. The 9 1/2" x 11 1/2" photo is held in a 1 3/4" dark wood frame with a thin gold line on the interior edge. Good condition, but the paper attached to the back of the frame is torn. |
