This is a folder of eight exterior photographs which were taken by Town & Country in 1910, but not used for the article about Blithewold published February 5, 1910. The photographs had been mounted in a scrapbook, which does not survive. Some of them were mounted on the scrapbook pages but have been removed for safe storage. 1976.1.P042.05a: Original photo looking down Lovers Lane through a vine covered gate. The lamp post is on the left. Verso shows remnants of black scrapbook page and is stamped: Wm.T. Clark/ View Photographer. Condition: fair, faded. 1976.1.P042.05b: Original photo taken from the northwest showing the north porch and the west facade at an angle. Large expanse of Great Lawn in foreground. Verso shows remnants of black scrapbook page. Condition: fair, faded, silvered on left edge. 1976.1.P042.05c: Original photo of the north end of the mansion with a closer view of the north porch. Verso shows remnants of black scrapbook page. Written in script:: "View of house looking out on lawn of fifteen acres." Condition: good. 1976.1.P042.05d: Original photo of the west facade. While this photo was included in the scrapbook with the 1910 photos, it appears to have been taken later. The tree at the northwest corner is much larger than in .05b and .05c and the beginnings of the north garden show at the right of the photo. Verso shows remnants of the black scrapbook page. Condition: fair, faded, silvered along right edge. 1976.1.P042.05e: Original photo of the west facade in closeup. The Great Lawn is in the foreground. Awnings are up over the loggia and the west porch. Verso shows remnants of the black scrapbook page and is stamped: Wm T. Clark/ View Photographer. This also may have been a later photo judging by the size of the trees and shrubs. Condition: fair, faded. 1976.1.P042.05f: Original photo of the Loggia in closeup clearly showing the detail in the stone facade. Verso shows remnants of the black scrapbook page. This photo duplicates one in the Wooden Album (1976.1.P043.006b). Condition: fair, several folds. 1976.1.P042.05g: Original photo of the Bousquet showing columns and statuary and considerable foliage. Verso shows remnants of black scrapbook page. Written in script:: "Bousquet/ Style Louis XVI/ marble fountain/ reproduction of Donatello's ____ at Pisa/ Bust of Apollo/ Byzantine columns." Condition: fair, silvered on right edge. 1976.1.P042.05h: Original photo of the beginnings of the Water Garden looking out to the Bay. The stone bridge and bench are evident, but plantings are sparse. Verso shows remnants of black scrapbook page. Written in script: "Water Garden." Condition: fair, dark, bottom right corner turned back. 1976.1.P042.05i: Original strip of four photos which includes two photos that were included in the the Town & Country photo album. Each of the photos is 3.5" x 5.5". The strip is 15.75" long. The top photo is a smaller version of 1976.1.P042.05a; the third photo is a smaller version of 1976.1.P042.05e. Condition: fair, one crease after first photo, edges tattered, photo quality good. |
