Box 1976.1.P061 Boating Activities FOLDER 03 (1976.1.P061.03) The CHANTICLEER The Chanticleer was chartered by William McKee in 1907. She was 118 feet overall, 79 feet waterline, and 22 feet breadth. Built in 1902 at Morris Heights for George W. Weld of Boston. She was sailed all over the east coast by the family until World War I (1914). Photo#Photo Description 01The Chanticleer under full sail, taken from a passing boat.. Visible are crew and guests on stern . Also visible is the railing and structure for sails of passing boat. Sepia print ,6.75 W x 8.75 H. Fair condition, Fading on right side, tear and crease on upper left side. 02Chanticleer under full sail., showing crew and guests on both stern and bow. Appears to have fog along waterline. Matted print 8.00 H x 10.0 W Good condition. 03ab Two nearly identical copies of photograph of group of five (four women and one man) on board Chanticleer, Augustine second from right, next to Captain Slocum. Also visible are railings, wicker chair, life preserver, and what appears to be records. 3.5 H x 5.75 W 03a has some fading, 03b good condition. 04Marjorie and George on stern of Chanticleer 1914. Also visible are two crew, helm, sail, blankets, wicker chair and vents to below decks. 3.5 H x 5.75 W good condition. 05Marjorie and George on stern of Chanticleer with two unidentified friends Also visible is rigging. 3.5 H x 5.75 W good condition. 06Boston Globe newspaper article about Chanticleer accident in July 1907. Chanticleer had been on railway at Lawley's Basin in South Boston for several days being painted. While being lowered down the ways, shores under the port side gave way. Chanticleer toppled over. Severe damage occurred. 07ab Stationery and postcard from Chanticleer 7a is a 4.75 W x 6.50 H sheet of stationary from the yacht Chanticleer. Centered at the top of the sheet are three burgees. Underneath is "On Board Flagship Chanticleer". 7b is a postcard, 3.38 H x 5.50 W of the yacht Chanticleer in full sail, other small ships appear in the distance. Crew and guests may be seen on board.. Condition fair, tear on right edge, some discoloration. Versa: are the words "POSTCARD" . at the left are the words "correspondence here". On the right words "name and address here" Postcard has a one cent stamp which has been postmarked "Bristol / Aug 13, 14 / 7-30 AM / RI" In the address area is written " Miss Augustine Van Wickle / Bristol Ferry / Bristol RI. There is damage to this side, black marks on all edges indicating that postcard was removed from a black surface to which it had been attached. 08ab Assorted photos taken on the Chanticleer 8a Nine Photo copies of various pictures taken on Chanticleer showing Augustine, friends and staff on Chanticleer in 1916. Originals are in Box 1976.1.PO59 Boating Ephemera 8b Five original photos taken on Chanticleer. Additional orginals of these photos are in P059. On reverse side is an original photo of two America Cup boats, The Vanities and The Resolute. 09 Chanticleer under full sail off Blithewold, pilings of dock in foreground. 2.75 H x 4.5 W. Fair condition, significant fading. |
