Box 1976.1.P028 Pets c1896-c1960 Folder 02 (1976.1.P028.02) Loose photographs of the family dogs c1896-c1960 Along with photos of the family dogs, this folder contains a letter dated February 1896 to Marjorie from her mother, Bessie. "Papa sends much love- he saw the Japanese Spaniels at the Dog Show and said Sara Ito was prettier than any there, though she does weigh too much to get a prize." Photo#Photo Description 01Augustine and Sara Ito on the steps of Blithewold I. c1899 Augustine and the dog are looking at each other. Augustine is a toddler, dressed in a white dress, jacket, and matching hat. She is wearing white stockings and dark colored high strap Mary Jane shoes. Black and white photocopy. 8.50"W x 11"H. Good condition. 02 Unidentified small dark colored dog, with light colored paws, lying on a wooden step. The dog is wearing a large collar. Undated.3.25"W x 4.25"H. Sepia tone. Good condition. 03Augustine holding Tiny Tim (dog) on terrace of Blithewold II. c1920 Augustine is wearing a light colored, long dress and a bracelet on her left wrist. She is standing next to a potted plant. Another potted plant is behind Augustine, under the dining room awning. Written on back of photograph, in pencil: "Aug. + Tiny Tim. Sepia tone. 1.50"W x 1.75"H. Old number: 76.1630. Good condition. 04Medium-sized (Irish Terrier?) dog. Undated. Note on front of photo states, "Possibly one of MVWL's Irish Terriers (somewhere on Blithewold grounds)" The dog is standing on grass with a crumbling stone wall in the near background. In the far background is a low wooden fence with a stone wall behind it. The trunks of many tall trees are in the background. Limbs are leafless. Black and white photograph. 4.50"W x 3.50"H. Good condition. 05Sepia photograph of an unidentified Irish Terrier on the Blithewold Terrace. Undated. The photograph is taken from the south. The dog is standing with its paws on the eastern balustrade , at the top of the stairs, looking towards Narragansett Bay. 5.50"W x 3.25"H. Good condition. 06aSepia photo of Marjorie and George Lyon, and two dogs that has been made into a Christmas card. The photograph shows two Irish Setters waiting to enter a closed six-paneled front door. The house is light colored clapboards. Handwritten below the photo: "Merry Xmas and a welcome awaits you! George and Marjorie Lyon- 1928-. " The photo measures 2.50"W x 2.50"H. The card is 3.75"W x 5.75"H. Original photo is in box #1976.1.PO40 Blithewold II Exterior Early 1900s. 08Photograph of five dogs in a pen in front of a stone wall. Note on photo says, "Blithewold family dogs including M&GL's Irish Terrier. c1930s The front of the pen is open and a gloved man seems to be giving the dogs something from his hand. 5"W x 4"H. Good condition 09aBlack and white photograph that has been made into a Christmas Card. Marjorie and George Lyon and two terriers are sitting in front of a white clapboard house with dark shutters. Marjorie is wearing a long dress and dark shoes, with a scarf draped around her neck. George is dressed in a suit, tie and fedora. Handwritten on front of card is:"Merry Xmas & Happy New Year from George and Marjorie 1931." Card is 5"W x 4"H. Good condition. 09bCopy of 09a with handwritten message 09cCopy of 09a 10aBlack and white photograph of Marjorie and George Lyon and two dogs and a cat that has been made into a Christmas card. George and Marjorie are standing on either side of a three-paneled bay window. The house is light colored and the shutters are dark. middle window has a Christmas wreath. George and Marjorie are each holding a the leash of a terrier. There is a cat sitting on a table in front of the window. George is wearing a fur coat and fedora, long pants and a shirt and tie. Marjorie is wearing a fur jacket, mid-calf dark skirt, hose and dark shoes. She is also wearing a bowler hat. Handwritten on card below the photo:" Merry Xmas- A Happy New Year from all the friends(?) at our house. George and Marjorie hope the year will be a peaceful one. Pat, Peggy, and Peter aren't so sure! -1932-" 4.25"W x 5.50"H. Good condition. 10bCopy of 10a. Good condition, but the photograph has faded to sepia tone. 11aBlack and white photograph of Marjorie,George and dogs that has been made into a card. 1933 This appears to have been taken at the same time as photograph 10a. George and Marjorie are wearing the same clothing as in the Christmas card photograph. George and Marjorie are standing with the terriers on a path between two stone walls. There are tall, leafless deciduous trees on the path. Card measures: 4.57"W x 5.75"H. Good condition. 11bCopy of 11a. Faded to sepia tone. Handwritten in pencil on front of the card: "1933." 11cCopy of 11a 12Black and white photograph of Bessie sitting on a stone bench on the Blithewold Terrace with two Irish Setters. Good condition. 15Black and white photograph of Marjorie Jeffries and her Irish Setter.An unidentified woman is holding Marge's hand. They are on the rocks at the Blithewold beach. Marge is wearing a dress and sweater. The woman is wearing a bathing outfit. C1935. 5.75"W x #.50"H. Good condition. 16Christmas card that has been made with two sepia photographs of Marjorie and George. 1935. The top photograph shows Marjorie holding the front paws of two terriers. She is wearing a long, light colored dress. Tall trees, with foliage, are behind her. The bottom photograph is of George on skis and on top of a pile of snow with tall ,leafless trees and a stone wall behind him. He is wearing a short fur coat and long, dark colored pants. Handwritten under the photos: Summer -Winter at 209 with Christmas greetings George and Marjorie- 1935-" No old number. 4"W x6"H. Good condition. 17Double sided pencil sketch of two dogs, completed by Marjorie Lyon. Undated. Handwritten in pencil on sketch: "Peg" under one dog, "Pat" under the other dog. " 1934-5 M.L." 6"W x 5"H. Good condition. 18Black and white photograph of two large,dark colored dogs lying on the grass. There are leafed deciduous trees, evergreens, a wooden fence, and a hill in the background. 1937. 4.25"W x 3"H. Good condition. 19Four sepia photographs of Marjorie, George, Ian and Robert (British refugees) that have been made into a Christmas card. The first photograph shows George standing on the Blithewold Terrace in front of a stone bench. He is wearing a light colored sport jacket and trousers with a dark colored belt. The second photograph is of Ian and Robert on a pier. Both are holding camera and are dressed in tee shirts and shorts. The third photo is of Marjorie. She appears to be sitting on the top of a low stone wall. She is wearing a printed fabric dress. The final photograph is a copy of photograph 14 from this folder. (Dark colored puppies in two bushel baskets.) 6"W x4.75"H. Good condition. 1942-1943 20Color photograph of Marjorie Shaw Jeffries in front of a fountain in the North Garden. Marjorie is leaning over and looking at an Irish Terrier puppy who is lying on the ground. Marge's hair is in braids. She is wearing shorts, a blouse with rolled up sleeves, sneakers, and socks. She has a camera in her hand. 1948. 5"W x 3"H. No old number. Fair condition. Color is faded entire photograph is yellowed. 21Color photograph of Marjorie Lyons' Irish terrier lying on the grass at Blithewold. Another dog is lying in the background. There are a tractor and unhitched wagon beyond the dogs. An unidentified man is hauling something by hand behind the tractor. 1948 5"W x 3.50"H. Fair condition. Color is faded. Entire photograph has a yellow appearance. 22Black and white photograph of Marjorie Lyon and two terriers that has been made into a Christmas card. They are on a path bordered by low rocks. There are tall trees and much foliage in the background. Marjorie is wearing a light colored mid-calf dress. Handwritten on front of card:"Christmas greeting to Mrs. Castro from Mrs. Lyon - 1953 -." 4"W x 6"H. Good condition. 23 Black and white photograph is of two dark colored dogs in the Water Garden at Blithewold. Made into a Christmas card. Handwritten on card:"Merry Xmas! from dogs and lillies and Mrs. Lyon 1956."4"W x 6"H. Good condition. 24Colored photograph of two small dogs, Sammy and Roiss (sp). The dogs appear to be snoozers. They are lying on a rust, black, and tan plaid throw and a gold and white patterned pillow. Old number: 76.1722. 4.50"W x 3.50"H. Good condition. C1960 25 Copy of a letter from Marge Jeffries about dogs at Blithewold. This is written on hand sketched stationery of a scene of fields and windmills near Straby, Denmark M. Jeffries, 2000. The letter is dated March 14, but no year. Unless otherwise noted, all photos are original prints. Photograph numbers above begin with 1976.1.P028.01 |
