Index for Box 1976.1.P036 BLITHEWOLD I INTERIOR and EXTERIOR c1896 - 1906 Folder 01 (1976.1.036.01) BLITHEWOLD I INTERIOR This is a folder containing interior photographs of Blithewold I. The photographs were taken prior to 1906 when the first Blithewold was destroyed by fire. The pictures are described below: 1976.1.P036.01.01a: Photograph of the Entrance hall with fireplace at the left and the staircase at the rear. Note the staircase goes up from south to north, the opposite of Blithewold II. Existing pieces of furniture visible are the carved oak center table (1976.1.4728), carved oak bench (1976.1.4729) and one of the Baroque arm chairs (1976.1.4671). There are vases on the mantle and objects on the table which may still be in the Collection. The brass tool holder mounted on the right side of the brick fireplace remains in the Hall fireplace as do the tongs hanging within (1976.1.4740a & b). Above the mantle is an elaborate plaster molding with a mirror mounted in the center. The Blithewold I commemorative trowel with the pearl handle (1976.1.5374) is visible under the mirror on the mantel. There is a fake snake under the table. This photograph is printed on Kodak Ink Jet paper and appears to be a copy of .01b. 10.25" x 8.5". Good condition. Foreground very dark. 1976.1..P036.01.01b: Original photograph, same as .01a, mounted on cardboard. 14.75" x 12.25". Right top corner of cardboard missing. Photo is 7.5" x 9.5". Good condition. Not as dark as .01a. 1976.1.P036.01.02: Original photo of first floor entrance hall. Appears to be the wall opposite the fireplace as the carved oak table is in the foreground. The wall has carved pillars and a carved shell surrounding a seat with cushion and pillows. Woodwork is painted white. On the table is a distinctive lamp similar to one now in the Collection. This lamp appears in other photos. Old #76.1790. 3.75" x 4.75". Good condition. 1976.1.P036.01.03a: Photograph of Blithewold I Living Room printed on Kodak Ink Jet paper. It appears to be a copy of .03b. The fireplace with the Blithewold stone is center back. On the mantle are 2 unidentified vases, the two bronze five light candelabra (1976.1.4502.1 & 2), and the mahogany Chippendale mantel clock (1976.1.1128). The chair in the left foreground is the mahogany open arm chair (1976.1.4512) then covered in what appears to be needlepoint. The oak side cabinet (1976.1.4530) is in the right back corner. In the right foreground is the library table (1976.1.4516) with the same lamp which appeared in the Hall photo (1976.1.P036.01.02). The walls are wall papered, the floor is covered with patterned carpet and a small oriental rug is in front of the fireplace. The painting of a vase of flowers to the left of the fireplace (1976.1.1007) now hangs in Augustine's room. It is by Paul de Longpre/ 1896. 8" x 10". Good condition. 1976.1.P036.01.03b: Original photo mounted on grey cardboard same as .03a. 14.75" x 12.25". Photo is 7.5" x 9.5". Good condition. 1976.1.P036.04a. Photograph printed on Kodak Ink Jet paper. Appears to be copy of original photo .04b mounted on cardboard. Dining room table (1976.1.4774.1) is in the foreground, flanked by two armchairs. One chair is against the wall next to the fireplace (1976.1.4774.2). Chairs are covered in a patterned fabric, remnants of which are in the Collection. One of the vitrines (1976.1.4774.4) is to the left of the fireplace with another glass walled cabinet on top of it, which is no longer in the Collection. A number of steins, some of which are now located in the Billiard Room (e.g.,1976.1.4684), are on the mantel, plate rail and cabinet. There are 4 candlesticks with candle covers on the mantel. Mounted above the mantel is one of the Dutch Delft pictorial wall plaques now on the plate rail (appears to be 1976.1.4785) and one of the plates on the plate rail appears to be 1976.1.4785. 1 or 2. 8" x 10". Good condition. A bit dark. 1976.1.P036.01.04b: Original photograph mounted on gray cardboard, same as .04a. 14.75" x 12.25". Good condition. Photo is 7.5" x 9.5". Good condition. 1976.1.P036.01.05: Original photograph mounted on gray cardboard of the Billiard Room. The billiard table is forefront, covered in a monogrammed cloth. One of the high billiard chairs (1976.1.4674.1,2 or 3) is to the left and a short one (1976.1.4674.4 or 5) to the right. In the center background is an alcove with a window and window seats and drapes which could be pulled across. 14.75" x 12.25". Photo is 7.5" x 9.5". Good condition. |
