Description |
This is a small roll top inlaid desk with four tapered legs ending in metal caps. The overall pattern is a basketweave, which adorns the sides of the roll top, the front of the single drawer and the fronts of the top side doors and small center drawer. An inlay of a musical instrument is in the center of a circle decorating the roll top. Opening the top side doors reveals two small drawers and a shelf on each side. Under the roll top on either side is a small drawer and a shelf flanking a central compartment. The desk top pulls out and is covered by a permanently affixed leather blotter. The center drawer has a metal knob, the two top doors, the roll top and the drawer all have keyholes. There are keys in all except the front drawer. Sotheby's describes this piece:"Louis XVI style parquetry and marquetry tulip wood bureau a cylindre. The superstructure with two small doors flanking a shelf and a drawer; the roll top with oval musical trophy on diamond ground, above a frieze drawer and taperings legs ending in brass box casters." |
