Description |
Dutch walnut-ground marquetry Daybed / Chaise Longue with broad S-form headrest and bowed seat. The curved headboard is decorated with flowers and vines in an urn. The gold embroidered fabric covering matches the bed clothes and other upholstered furniture in the room. The rails have grotesque masks supporting floral vines and are raised on C-scroll supports. The Daybed can be seen in a 1910 photo (ID# 1976.1.P043.094) of the Master Bedroom, along with other Marquetry furnishings including twin beds, a highboy, dressing table, couch, bureau, desk, tiered table, and a cheval glass mirror. *According to Samuel Dean, the Marquetry furnishings in the Master Bedroom are "Dutch eighteenth century" and made of "mahogany with inlay of foliated designs in colored woods." The chaise was conserved in a years long effort (2019-2024). Several major steps took place. All components of the daybed, except the upholstery were stabilized and conserved including the marquetry, springs, webbing/strapping, cushioning, legs, and so on. The ripped, stained, and discolored showcover upholstery was considered to be too far gone to be conserved, so in it was reproduced (both the fabric and embroidery). To accomplish this time was spent surmising the original color of the fabric. It was thought to be more of a true beige color than the gold and green-tinged color of the current/aged fabric. The fabric was selected based on the original color and the texture, and after considering a variety of options, it was determined that the best choice was to have the color custom printed on a simple cotton twill. Once this printed fabric was received by Blithewold, it was sent out to be embroidered using color-matched cotton thread to recreate the exact pattern of leaves and flowers. This was accomplished using the same type of machine that created the original design more than 100 years ago. To complete the exacting reproduction, after embroidering was completed, the threads used were hand-painted, as was the original, to highlight the intrudes of the flowers and leaves. |
