Description |
Female doll with German Kestner bisque face (#167). The doll has blue glass sleep eyes, teeth in open mouth, original blonde mohair wig, composition and aticulated wood jointed body. She is dressed as a Bavarian peasant in pink and white striped cotton skirt, black velvet vest with white pearl buttons, white organza blouse and apron, both trimmed with lace, white cotton slip and pantaloons trimmed with lace. On her feet she has pink and white striped knit stockings and brown leather shoes fastened with black beads and metal findings and decorated with yarn pom poms. The J.D. Kestner doll company made dolls in the Waltershausen, Thuringia region of Germany for over 90 years. They began making bisque headed dolls in the second half of the 19th century and continued until 1938. Kestner was making dolls by the 1820s and was one of the first firms to make dressed dolls. Besides wooden dolls, papier-mache, wax over composition, and Frozen Charlottes, Kestner made bisque dolls with leather or composition bodies, chinas, all-bisque dolls, and celluloid dolls. They supplied bisque heads to Catterfelder Puppenfabrik, Borgfeldt, Butler Bros, Century Doll Co., Horsman, R.H. Macy, Sears, Siegel Cooper, F.A.O. Schwarz, and others were distributors for Kestner. Early bisque heads with closed mouths marked X or XI, turned shoulder head, and swivel heads on shoulder plates are thought to be Kestners. After 1892, dolls were marked "made in Germany" with mold numbers. |
