Description |
This international costume is a Chinese robe of blue silk damask with various motifs and symbols embroidered into the fabric. It has a rounded neckline with one center gold color cast brass button frog closure. The left panel wraps over the right and is held in place by three frog closures under the arms and one at the right front shoulder. The center closing edge is selvage of 25" wide panel. A 2 1/2" black silk band, which is finely embroidered with Chinese motifs: cranes carrying fungus (longevity), bats (happiness), peaches (fecundity), butterflies (marriage), and cherry blossom (spring) goes around the neck and continues to the hem on the right. The left side has the same trim from the underarm to the hem. These were all hand embroidered and then sewn onto the fabric. A 5/8" black silk ribbon trims the edge of the panels, neckline, and interior edge of the sleeve. In addition, a 1" multicolored woven ribbon is sewn 1/4" away from the embroidered trim. Just below the underarm is a medallion made from the multicolored ribbon and embroidered trim. The interior of the sleeve is lined with finely embroidered ivory silk. The cuffs would have been folded back, but would still be long enough to allow a person to have their hands covered when in public. |
