This is an American single barrel 303 caliber rifle with a walnut stock. The top of the barrel is engraved: MANUFACTURED BY SAVAGE ARMS COMPANY UTICA N.Y. U.S.A./ PAT-FEB 7 1893 JULY 25 1893 OCT 3 1899 MAY 23 1909 JUNE 1 1909. Also: SAVAGE HI-PRESSURE STEFL./ MODEL 1899. Under the sight: SAV. 303. The serial number 125108 is on the verso in front of the trigger and indicates it was made in 1912. Savage Arms, founded in 1894 in Westfield, MA, invented the first lever action rifle. It began producing the model 1899 in 1899, then turned to the production of pistols and other advanced weapons. It supplied more advanced military weapons for the world wars under different management and is still in business today. This rifle has a kill tally on both sides of the stock. The animal names have been carved in the stock and each kill is a stick. DEER: 33, MOOSE-6, CARIBOU-4, SHEEP-7, GOAT-2, BEARS-7, BLK-3. This was likely George Lyon's hunting rifle. |
