Description |
Marble dust composite or bisque bust of a woman. Center-parted wavy hair gathered at nape of neck in a classical fashion. Coiled drapery below shoulders, also classically inspired. The inscription "CLYTE," the name of an ancient Greek mythological figure, is carved into the bottom of the bust. The British Museum has the original of this bust in its collection, which is catalogued as "Clytie." Minton and Staffordshire both made reproductions of the bust. It's not clear which maker crafted the one owned by Blithewold, but it appears the production date is about 1881, based on the British Museum website. Listed in Sotheby's inventory as"Bisque porceain bust of Clytis / with bare shoulders, parted hair, and ringlets, impressed mark J. & T.B.". |
