Description |
Wooden Mah Jongg box with five drawers with small brass knobs. There is a brass handle on top which is recessed. It is a simple oak box painted black and it appears to have had a front panel at one time. Each of five drawers house the mahjong tiles. This set belonged ot Estelle Clements, and was a gift from Marjorie and Augustine in 1923. It is made of bamboo and ivory. Mah Jongg peaked in popularity around this time, and Estelle played often at Blithewold with Bessie and Marjorie, and sometimes with William McKee. Their favorite playing location was on the North Porch during the summer. When Augustine married and went to live in Calumet, Michigan, she would write to Estelle comparing Mah Jongg "hands."
