Description |
One of 8 taller stemware glasses, etched with crossed pennant flags and an emblem that reads "Marjorie." The pennants are representative of the 'Marjorie' Yacht and the New York Yacht Club flags. The full glassware set is comprised of approximately 50-pieces, of which 38 are variously sized stemware. The other pieces include a large and a small cup, stoppered decanters, cruets, small bowls, a candy dish, and votive candle holders. Some of the glassware has a very small mark etched on the foot of the glass, with a capital "S" inside of a wreath; other pieces read, "SINCLAIRE". This glassware is meant to be used with the Mintons china set (1976.1.4952). The pieces in the set have the same crossed flags and Marjorie insignia, but are painted in red, blue, and gold. Background: In 1894, while visiting friends in Rhode Island, Augustus Van Wickle purchased a 72-foot steam (and sailing) yacht from the Herreshoff boat-building company in Bristol. He and wife Bessie then began to search for a suitable property on which to build a water-front summer home where they could moor the new yacht. The Blithewold estate was a perfect choice for safe mooring of the yacht which they named 'Marjorie' after their daughter. Several years later, Augustus commissioned a second yacht "Marjorie" from Herreshoff. This boat was delivered in January 1900, two years after Augustus death. The Blithewold archives include the cash book from the second yacht. It shows $600 paid for china and $400 paid for glass on January 14, 1900. It is not known whether this was the initial purchase of the tableware or additional pieces for the planned trip to the West Indies. |
