Description |
One of 12 small bread plates. Made in England by Mintons and designed for the Van Wickle family for use on board the "Marjorie" yacht. The dishes have a cream color background with a thin gold border around the rim and a gold scalloped border on the inside rim. In colors of blue, red, and gold, each dish has a painted emblem with two crossed pennant flags. The pennants are representative of the 'Marjorie' and the New York Yacht Club flags. Unlike most of the other pieces in the set, the name Marjorie is not part of this design. Perhaps the plates are too small to allow for that detail. The full dinner set includes about 240 pieces of china. While the china was made by Minton in England, it was distributed by R. Briggs & Co., Boston. On most of the pieces, the makers mark reflects both companies. Seven of the salt dishes have a slightly different makers mark. A set of Baccarat Crystal engraved with similar symbols was used along with the china. See 1976.1.4953. In 1894, while visiting friends in Rhode Island, Augustus Van Wickle purchased a 72-foot steam (and sailing) yacht from the Herreshoff boat-building company in Bristol. He and wife Bessie then began to search for a suitable property on which to build a water-front summer home where they could moor the new yacht. The Blithewold estate was a perfect choice for safe mooring of the yacht which they named 'Marjorie' after their daughter. Several years later, Augustus commissioned a second yacht "Marjorie" from Herreshoff. This boat was delivered in January 1900, two years after Augustus death. The Blithewold archives include the cash book from the second yacht. It shows $600 paid for china and $400 paid for crystal on January 14, 1900. It is not known whether this was the initial purchase of the tableware or additional pieces for the planned trip to the West Indies. |
