Description |
This international costume is a black silk damask Chinese court scholar's robe with dragon medallions woven into the fabric. A deep split at center back and extra-long sleeves is typical of the Ming Dynasty style. The light blue lining is indigo dyed silk. The original silk buttons have been changed. Frog closures with five cast gold color buttons are not original and sewed on poorly. A significant amount of hand stitching was done to join lining fabric and outer fabric and also to attach frog closures. A tag reading "Chinese costumes, M. Lyon & G.A. Lyon brought from Honolulu1917" was handwritten in pencil by Marjorie. A 1917 travel journal entry written by Marjorie Lyon while in Honolulu may refer to this costume. "January 6th. Saturday. Fair; lovely day. A.M. I went down town. Got a Chinese costume (dress, bracelet, shoes and fan, for $21.90). Chinese place is No. 10 Hotel Street, Wing Wo Tai & Co..." |
