Description |
Vanity with inlaid marquetry designs around the oval mirror, along the vanity top and bottom shelf, on drawer fronts and sides of vanity and down the turned legs. The 1987 Sotheby's appraisal refers to this piece as a Dutch marquetry dressing table and dates it to circa 1900. The oval mirror swings on S-form supports which are fitted with urn finials. The frieze containing two drawers and raised on round legs is joined by a concave fronted shelf inlaid with birds and flower urns. Drawers have metal pulls. This piece of furniture is included in the Blithewold wooden album (circa 1910) in the following description:"Twin beds, highboy, dressing table, couch, bureau, desk, storied [?] table and cheval glass. Dutch eighteenth century. Mahogany with inlay of foliated designs in colored woods. Old Blithewold." |
