Marjorie Randolph Van Wickle Lyon |
Description |
Watercolor painting by Marjorie Van Wickle Lyon looking north from the enclosed garden. The chimney of the house is shown in the background, the dirt path is in the foreground. Tall evergreens and shorter shrubs in various shades of green dominate the view. The painting is signed M.R.VW. The painting is believed to have been done around 1900 based upon the discovery of a photograph showing an identical scene. In the photograph was a child, determined to be Augustine. With the estimate of her age, Marjorie's age would have been about 16. As a child Marjorie took painting lessons one summer with Mrs. Lulu Pratt, and another with Hannah Drury, both of Bristol. This may have been one of her watercolors done when she was taking summer lessons. Marjorie's love of painting blossomed in her late 60's after her husband, George Lyon, died. |
