Description |
This 6-piece brown velvet and silk walking suit has a jacket or dolman (2012.1.0116a), skirt (2012.1.0116b), reproduction bodice (2012.1.0116c), original bodice (2012.1.0116d) in very poor condition possibly from having trim removed and used on reproduction bodice (2012.1.0116c), muff (see 2012.1.0116e) and bonnet/hat (2012.1.0116f). The velvet jacket or dolam(2012.1.0116a) has a floral design, bat-wing sleeves and fringe around neck and front opening. The cuffs have brown passementerie and bead decoration. Label says "J.D.King/Cleveland, Ohio." The brown silk faille skirt (2012.1.0116b) has embroidered, applique, beaded front panel in floral and geometric designs. Puffs on sides and back of skirt with interior half hoops. The brown silk bodice/blouse (2012.1.0116c) has the same embroidery as skirt on cuffs and down front. This embroidery was likely removed from the original bodice (2012.1.0116d) and attached to this blouse made for Marjorie to wear the complete walking suit to the December 14, 1937 celebration of 125th anniversary of The Fragment Society in Boston. Original bodice (2012.1.0116d) is in very poor and unstable. Lots of interior shredding. Appears trim has been removed from the cuffs and collar and used on reproduction bodice/blouse (2012.1.0116c). The small muff (2012.1.0116e) is of the same brown and blue velvet material as the jacket (2012.1.0116a), skirt (2012.1.0116b), original bodice (2012.1.0116d)and bonnet (2012.1.0116f). The brown velvet bonnet/hat (2012.1.0116f) with blue and brown bow and few green feathers on top, a bow chin strap and embroidery to match skirt on back. Imprint on inside back of bonnet shows a crown with a ribbon below which says: "MODES." Below the ribbon says: "MME JENNIE BENNETT/ 145 W. 22nd. St./NEW YORK" The bonnet is located in the textile room on Aisle 1, Shelf 03, Box H13. |
