Description |
Tin tea caddy hand decorated with stenciled oak leaves and acorns and handpainted leaves and scrolls. The bottom is gold on black asphaltum background and the top is black and copper on a gold background. This box belonged to Bessie's great aunt, Sarah, daughter of her great grandmother, Rachel Johnson Pardee. She was given the box by Mrs. Waterman and she wrote about the gift to her sister, Alice Lee Pardee, in a letter dated October 19, 1915, which is in the archives. A copy of the letter is in the tea caddy. Listed in Sotheby's inventory as "English tole peinte tea caddy / 19th century / gilt stenciled with leaves on a black background." |
