Description |
One of a pair of cast lead heraldic lions each standing and wearing a crown. The front legs are in a grasping position. They stand on an oval base. Sotheby dates the lions to the late 19th century. Bessie Pardee Van Wickle McKeedescribes the lions in the Blithewold wooden album (circa 1910):"Bronze lions rampant and crowned, adapted as fire dogs. The lions were originally mounted on the entrance gates of an English estate in Northumberland. There the lions held wreaths of hops in their paws. Bronzes date the eighteenth century and are of Bavarian workmanship." Her next entry describes "Electrolier made from the wreaths of hop vines formerly held by the lions." That chandelier currently stands on the mantel (1976.1.4541). The lions stand in front of the fireplace in the 1915 picture from the album. |
