Description |
Small, decorative (faux?) tortoise shell on wood tea caddy with two interior lidded compartments, each of which has a small carved mother of pearl button handle for opening. Several online sources identify this object as a tea caddy. Box itself has an unadorned tortoise shell pagoda-form top hinged with a small unmonogrammed metal plate and silver filets in one front to back seam. Back and sides of the box are plain tortoise shell on wood. Front of box, also tortoise shell on wood, is inlaid with mother of pearl floral and vining leaves designs. Ivory buttons serving as feet for the box are at each of the flared four corners and held in place with metal screws. There is a keyhole with small metal (tarnished silver?) surround on the front of the box. No key has been located. There appear to be remnants of finely ground tea leaves in the interior compartments. |
