Description |
Green and gold silk two-piece (bodice a, skirt b) day dress. Part of Bessie's wedding trousseau.This color combination was typical of the 1880s. The fabrics were probably imported from France. The bodice (a) is of olive green silk faille fabric, with ivory and gold woven silk stripe of satin and moiré. The lining is ivory silk twill. Lace at the neckline and cuffs is cotton Duchess bobbin lace. Full-length fitted sleeves have tabs and lace cuffs. Buttons are metal with a cut steel design. There is a pleated fan tail center back. The skirt (b) is trained and bustled, with tabs over a pleated ruffle at the hem. A calico-covered horsehair bustle is attached. The bustle is cartridge-pleated, with steel ribs enclosed in the lining to support the skirt and train. There is a frill of lace along the hem ruffle. |
