Description |
English carved oak blanket chest. Late 19th century. The front relief-carved with knights on horseback, the sides with pine-cone laden branches and turrets. Carved from Blithewold oak fashioned after a tapestry design that exists in the Louvre. This piece of furniture is included in the Blithewold wooden album (circa 1910) in the following description:"Dowry chest of Blithewold oak. Carving copied from a fourteenth century tilting chest in the Museé Cluny. The carving on the front depicts mounted knights in full armor, engaged in tilting. Architecture and trees are treated in the early Gothic manner. The decoration of the sides of the chest is similar to the front. Fourteenth century key. The foliated detail of the wrought iron hinges is adapted from the massed foliage of the trees as seen on the front and sides of the chest." p. 102a |
