Description |
A carved walnut open armchair described by Sotheby's as Continental Baroque with pierced, carved and gilt acanthus finials above a rectangular [upholstered] back covered with a stumpwork coat of arms. The scrolled arms are carved with leafage and supported on turned legs with turned stretchers. Bessie McKee describes this chair in the Blithewold wooden album (circa 1910) as "Chair. Florentine seventeenth century walnut covered with Venetian velvet. The back is enriched by old French ecclesiastical embroidery. Foot cushion." A picture in the album shows the chair to the left of the fireplace with the cushion in front of the chair. |
