Description |
Two-piece cream silk and lace evening dress by Champot in Paris, made for Marjorie on her 1903-4 Grand Tour. The dress is entirely hand-stitched. The bodice (2012.1.0122a) has a rounded neckline, short puffed sleeves, is heavily trimmed and embellished with crochet appliques and satin ribbon details, and closes at center back with hooks and eyes. The foundation bodice is stiffened with 11 bones (baleen), and the grosgrain interior waistband bears the maker's name. The full, long gored skirt (2012.1.0122b) has a slight train and a center back opening with hook & eye closures. The skirt fabrics match the bodice (embroidered bobbinet underlaid with silk chiffon) and are trimmed with the same crochet appliques. Skirt front and back are made up of overlapping panels of the embroidered net stitched to the silk chiffon underlay fabric. The skirt lining is weighted around the hemline frill with a string of lead weights stitched into a cotton twill casing. Another row of weights is stitched around the side and back panels, 20" up from the CB hem. The narrow waistband and skirt lining are both ivory silk habotai. |
