Dee Shaw was born Augustine Pardee Shaw in June 1925. Her parents were Augustine Van Wickle and Quincy Adams Shaw of Boston. Dee was the first grandchild of Bessie Van Wickle McKee. For the first few days she was called "Augustine Two", and ever after "Dee". Her sister, Marjorie Pemberton Shaw, was born 3 years later in 1928.

Though Dee was born in Boston, Quincy and Augustine were living in Calumet, Michigan where Quincy managed his father's copper-mining company. They moved back to Boston around 1927 to be closer to their families, and they built a house on Sears Road in Brookline on a 16-acre plot near the country club, the land a gift from Quincy's father. Bessie and William McKee loved having their only grandchildren living nearby.

By 1934, Augustine and Quincy Shaw were having serious problems in their marriage. They divorced in 1935 and Augustine and the two children spent one year at Blithewold living with the McKees. Dee and Marjorie went to Wheeler School in Providence, driven the seventeen miles each day by Bessie's chauffeur, Arthur Rae. Marjorie loved her year at Blithewold, but Dee was angry and resentful at the upheaval and at having to leave her home, her friends, and her father.

Shortly after a wonderful Christmas, 1935, Bessie had an accident at Blithewold and died three weeks later. At the end of the school year, Augustine moved to Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania, where she met Robert Toland. They married at Blithewold in 1937. Dee spent the rest of her childhood in Whitemarsh, Pennsylvania, at the Toland family's estate "Aubrey", but as part of Augustine's divorce agreement, Dee and Marjorie Shaw were to spend part of every summer at Blithewold until they turned 21.

Dee married Francis Hatch in1946 and had a son, Timothy Whiting Hatch in 1948. Dee and Frank Hatch divorced soon after the birth of Tim, and Dee married Allan Butler, with whom she had 3 more children, Ellen, Allan, and Robert. This marriage also ended in divorce, and Dee launched a successful business buying and renovating houses in Beverly Farms and Rockport, Massachusetts. She taught ski-ing, and began painting. She also began to travel extensively, in France, Belgium, England, and Germany where she studied the language and enjoyed living among the students. However, her travels were cut short when she became ill with bone cancer and she returned to Boston. She died in Boston in 1987.
